What is it?
Grit is the perseverance and passion to achieve long–term goals. Sometimes you will hear grit referred to as mental toughness. Angela Duckworth, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, suggests that grit is a strong predictor of success and ability to reach one’s goals.
Grit isn’t about just bearing hard stuff to make the finish line. It is also about making the hard decision to quit because its the smart decision. Its about persevering and making the tough choices moment by moment through the hardest moments of life and turning them into fulfilling moments.
- Persevere through difficult circumstances without losing confidence
- Never become victims because they retain personal choice
- Are more consistent
- Focus on what they can control
- Learn from mistakes and then let go
Just Getting Started?
One of the best ways to get started with grit, is to teach your students grit terminology and have them assess their own levels of grit.
GRIT is your “capacity to dig deep, to do whatever it takes – especially struggle, sacrifice, even suffer – to achieve your most worthy goals.” – Dr. Paul G. Stoltz
